Members Health Co offers a modern alternative or addition to traditional health insurance

The Cost of Traditional Health Insurance

Offering benefits to employees has become synonymous with offering basic health insurance. Unfortunately, health insurance does not do much to keep employees healthy, yet costs your business several thousands of dollars per employee.

Let’s take a look at the key findings from the 2023 Kaiser Family Foundation Survey of the average premiums for employer-sponsored insurance.

Family Coverage: The average annual premium was $23,991

  • Employers contributed an average of $17,885 annually per premium

  • Employees contributed an average of $6,106 annually

Single Coverage: The average annual premium was $8,209

  • Employers contributed an average of $6,828 annually per premium

  • Employees contributed an average of $1,381 annually

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that productivity losses linked to health-related absenteeism cost U.S. employers $225.8 billion annually, which averages to $1,685 per employee per year.

Why Health Insurance Does Not Keep Your Employees Healthy

  • Most primary care physicians do not have availability for last minute visits. Even routine visits are often scheduled mid-day. This means your employee would have to take unpaid time off from work for health prevention visits or minor health concerns. Therefore, most employees put off routine care and minor concerns until they become major.

  • In addition to limited physician availability, traditional primary care clinics are only open and available during regular business hours Monday-Friday. If an employee needs to be seen outside of these hours, they are directed to an urgent care or emergency room (ER). Often they are required to wait for several hours and receive only the minimum care needed to safely discharge them - any minor, routine, or preventive concerns are referred back to primary care. Many urgent care clinics and ERs are considered out-of-network for certain insurance plans, and your employee may get a surprise bill weeks later for an exorbitant amount.

  • Most healthy employees opt for high-deductible plans because of the lower monthly premium. Though, if they go to a traditional primary care clinic they end up paying high co-pays for every visit or don’t have any of their visit costs covered until their deductible is met - hence why most employees put off medical care despite being insured.

  • Most traditional clinics see healthy patients only once a year for an annual physical, which is limited in scope due to the lack of insurance reimbursements or coverage for preventive care and health optimization. Even then, most healthy employees avoid their annual physical due to concerns of co-payments and high-deductibles. While most plans claim to cover the cost of an annual physical, if a traditional physician orders any additional lab work or addresses any health concerns, the visit is often billed leading to surprise extra costs.

Unique Benefits for Small and Large Employer Groups

  • Setting up a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) can be a beneficial way for employers to provide health benefits to their employees. An HRA allows employers to reimburse their employees tax-free for qualified medical expenses, including health insurance premiums, membership-based healthcare, and other health-related costs.

  • Employer Benefits:

Tax-Deductible: Contributions made by the employer to the HRA are tax-deductible as a business expense.

No Payroll Taxes: Employers do not have to pay payroll taxes on contributions made to an HRA.

    Employee Benefits:

Tax-Free Reimbursements: Employees are reimbursed tax-free for qualified medical expenses up to a maximum limit set by the employer. This means that reimbursements from an HRA are not included in the employee’s gross income.

Potential Savings: Employees can potentially save on taxes that would otherwise be paid on out-of-pocket medical expenses.

  • 1. Qualified Small Employer Health Reimbursement Arrangement (QSEHRA):

Applicability: Available to employers with fewer than 50 full-time employees that do not offer a group health insurance plan.

Usage: Employers can reimburse employees for qualified medical expenses, including cost of membership-based healthcare, as well as health insurance premiums if the employees purchase their own insurance.

Contribution Limits: There are annual contribution limits (adjusted yearly for inflation).

    2. Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA):

Applicability: Available to employers of any size and can be offered alongside traditional group health insurance plans, provided they are offered to different classes of employees.

Usage: Can reimburse premiums for individual health insurance and other medical expenses, including cost of membership-based healthcare. Employees must be enrolled in individual health insurance coverage to participate.

Flexibility: Employers can set different reimbursement limits for different classes of employees.

  • Healthshares are an insurance alternative that offers coverage on a per incident basis at a fraction of the cost of traditional insurance. These are a great option to pair with membership-based healthcare for people who are otherwise healthy and only need coverage in case of an emergency.

Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) is a catastrophic insurance plan that meets the requirements of the ACA, and is much cheaper than traditional insurance plans. This is a great option for large employer groups (50+ employees) to offer their employees and pair with membership-based healthcare.

We partner with healthshare and MEC providers to provide comprehensive coverage as an option for you and your employees for a fraction of the cost of traditional health insurance. Please inquire for more information.
